VSI Rotor Tip Lifespan: Why Steel Hardness Isn’t Enough

We often hear from field operators asking: “Our rotor tips wear out too fast. Is it because the steel body isn’t hard enough?”

The short answer is no. Focusing only on steel hardness is a very common trap in aggregate crushing. Blindly chasing harder steel does not make your tips last longer. Instead, it increases your purchasing costs and can even cause the carbide to fall off during operation.

What actually determines the lifespan of a VSI rotor tip? It comes down to two real factors: choosing the right carbide grade and using proper brazing or hardfacing processes. Let’s look into the technical details behind this.

3 Key Factors That Control VSI Rotor Tip Lifespan

  • Steel Selection and Brazing Friendliness: Standard carbon steels like 25#, 35#, and 45# are actually the ideal choice for tip bodies. If you use high-hardness steel or complex alloy steel, the heat during brazing creates massive internal stress. This stress makes the carbide tip detach much easier when hitting heavy rocks.
  • Hardness Comparison: Even after heat treatment, the steel body reaches around 78 HRA. Meanwhile, the tungsten carbide insert reaches up to 91.5 HRA. The carbide is what actually resists rock wear. The steel body only serves as a support structure. Over-pursuing steel hardness is simply a waste of resources.
  • Impact Resistance and Carbide Grade: Avoiding breakage is the basic standard for any wear part. Under high-speed rotation, hardness alone is not enough. The carbide’s grain size and toughness must match your specific rock conditions. For softer stone, you can adjust the grade for higher wear resistance. For high-hardness stone, the carbide needs superior toughness to prevent cracking under heavy impact.

Why Factory-Brazed Tips Outperform DIY Welding

Many aggregate plants buy raw carbide inserts and weld them onto steel bodies in their own workshops. However, field reports show these DIY parts often suffer from frequent tip drop-offs.

Proper carbide brazing requires strict control over heating temperature, specialized flux and filler alloys, and post-weld stress relief. Without these steps, the brazing seam remains weak under heavy work loads.

Our factory has spent 17 years studying cemented carbide formulations and 12 years perfecting VSI rotor tip brazing processes. We customize carbide grades based on your actual rock hardness, ensuring stable bond quality and longer service life.
